Man I just wish people would stop opening up crappy restaurants. This place is newly opened I went on Friday, Lunch time. Line was out the door. It took me 20 min to get to the cashier and 10 to get my food. I ordered Chicken Teriyaki with extra meat and a drink. The total was 8 something... not bad for lunch right? When I received my meal I got a plate of rice with a mound of oily greasy chicken thigh pieces. No veggies, nothing. Chicken and rice. The picture looked real good but what I got didn't. The taste was OK, needed salt. I poured some soy sauce on it but didn't help. I will go back and try a Bento Box but for now I stand by my 2 stars. I would of been more satisfied at Boardwalk Burgers. That's a whole other review. I would recommend this place after a night of drinking when you need all that oil to coat your stomach.

The staff is really unprofessional and the "owner," maybe just "manager" is horrible! I NEVER expected this place to be that good...all im asking for is a decent, cheap "sushi" spot near me... I'll drive hours to not ever come back here...Take your money and time and to You'll do better at the WaWa across the way...

We are looking forward to going there again, why? because we love love love Japanese food, and their shrimp tempura is to die for! The price was ok, portion size not too big, service ok, but the food was really delicious! We paid around $19 for vegetable and shrimp tempura, which included sushi ,fried rice and more shrimp tempura. Good deal, the place was not packed, and it was a Saturday evening.

Food isn't good, the Asian woman manager is mean to the white guy who works the register and it makes things awkward.

I enjoyed this place simply for its simplicity. I walked there from my hotel and had a fair noodle dish and a fair eel roll. It was Asian fast food a slight step above Panda Express. I think they whip your meal up on the spot but from pre-prepped proteins. If you are looking for a fabulous meal there are far better choices in the area. This is a convenient place that's about it.

Not bad for a quick noodle fix. Been here a few times and the food has always been good. The service is a standard fast-food "waiting for my shift to end" effort.

It's OK not bad for the price. Service was friendly, and the place is clean. We did find a bone in one piece of sashimi.

Have you ever heard the phrase "It's too good to be true?" That's the case with Sarku, don't have high expectations, because in all reality it's almost along the lines of McSushi. In an area with so many vibrant Japanese/Asian cuisine restaurants, this is not one you want to go out of your way to eat at.

Place is expensive for no reason! Near my place the same restaurant is much cheaper! What?! The lady serving, which I'm guessing is the manager, screamed at me! NEVER AGAIN! I wish I could give it a zero star

Delicious, wonderful food for a good price. I recommend the Bento Box!

It's 91 outside so maybe they have inadequate cooling system but I was comfortable going in but sweating when I left. Then it's the little things like the cashier up selling "spring rolls with that?" When I'd already ordered the Bento box Delux. And the brown rice option. 50 cents magically added to the check for mushy undercooked rice. Sure it's fast food but do the Japanese really like all these greasy deep fried sweet potatoes, shrimp, and zucchini?

I frequent this establlshment very often since it opened. I am rating it high in it's category of a casual/fast food restaurant I am giving this location 5 stars because when a chain restaurant continually: 1. Gives you fast and friendly service; 2. Serves good food with hearty portions; 3. Dining area and restroom is clean and neat over 98% of the time; 4. Is inexpensive, yet the food tasty; then the restaurant deserves this 5 star rating for being consistent with behavior, and generous with portions. The sushi and rolls were well made and delicious. The teriyaki chicken is always moist and tender, not too sweet and not too salty. Their dumplings are good as is their miso soup. I have been to other Sarku's and they are not the same and would probably deserve 3 stars.

Sarku Japan was a little bit better than we were expecting it to be, but that doesn't make it great. I'm not familiar with this chain, but I get the feeling they also exist in food courts. This one, however, is a free standing location in a strip mall. Service was very friendly. The restaurant was clean. The food came out pretty quickly (though, it all seems to be pre-made). Portions were fairly big and the prices were reasonable. I had the teriyaki chicken which included a good bit of chicken. My wife's tofu bento box, however, was severely lacking in the tofu part of the tofu bento box. Both of our main dishes were acceptable, though not outstanding. The side items were a big disappointment though. The miso soup was clearly a packet mix and was incredibly watery. The salad was rendered inedible by a "nasty" salad dressing. One last thing that sort of confused us was how focused they seemed to be advertising themselves as a "green" restaurant - but served food in styrofoam containers which cannot be recycled.

Bento Box ... hold the human hair please. This restaurant is disgusting, there was human hair in my food. When I brought it back to the counter, the cashier called the manager who tried to argue with me about exchanging the meal for something else. Horrible customer service, bad hygiene, and a disregard for customers. This place should be avoided for multiple reasons.

I've been coming for this location for a long time, I noticed that the price is higher than other locations and the plate is much smaller !!! In other location you get good portion of chicken, here barely, you get a lot of rice , I mean a lot !!! And a lot of veggie , Sarku Japan really disappointed me, I eat in their restaurants a lot , but I think never again in this locations , I have it two stars only because the food is ok.

It's a chain. It is what it is. That said, it seems I need to go into more detail, because judging by some of the previous review, some people have zero common sense. Things you SHOULD order/eat: -Vegetable tempura. Very good for a fast food chain. Good variety of vegetables that are fried crisp and hot -- no soggy bits at all. -Chicken teriyaki (ask for more vegetables, less chicken) over rice. If you must have noodles, get half rice/ half noodle. -Sriracha sauce. Things you should NOT order/eat: -Shrimp. Duh. -Sushi. Duh. Times you SHOULD order/eat here: -On a middle school or high school date(?) -Before/after a trip to the College Park Ikea. -When you are poor. -When you are drunk/hungover. -When you are poor and drunk/hungover. Times you should NOT order/eat here: -On a date (after the age of 16 or so). -Before an important event. -Before a long car ride. -When you are on a diet.

Chicken teriyaki's not bad - not overly sweet like "bourbon chicken ", yet the taste is a little reminiscent.. Restaurant is clean, albeit a tad stark; the walls are monotone, but a nice modern color. There seems to be a lack of tables for the room size; I figured that maybe they just bought tables and chairs , but were holding off on getting the booths or more tables until business brought some revenue in the door.

I'm guilty of getting this chicken at malls. I see how disgusting it is when the chicken is schlopped out in front of you and cooked. I've seen them clean the grill and mix the old burnt chicken pieces with the new. I've also then eaten the whole thing down afterwards feeling guilty because somehow it always tastes gooooood. Alas.... this isn't the best fast food joint but you know what you're getting and If you're in the mood for a greasy chicken teriyakki fix then Sarku Japan is the place. I've passed this place often and finally went in. The food was the same and the sushi was ok. You can't expect 5 stars top notch food at a place that is meant to be what it is.... quick, easy and yummy ( buy not necessarily healthy).

I'm always looking for new places in the area to try, since the choices are so limited. I decided to try this place for lunch with a coworker. Its basically a panda express but with less selection of chicken and sides and sushi instead. I would never have fast food sushi, so I went for the chicken teriyaki with noodles. Everything was covered in grease, even the "steamed veggies." I've had burgers from five guys with less grease. The taste was ok, and the food was cheap, but everything was so heavy and just blah thanks to the grease and oil. Not a fan...

Their teriyaki beef and shrimp is delicious and nomworthy. Customer service isn't the best but hey the food is great. Their sushi is pretty good too I love this fast food chain

Haha.. we've spent a large amount of time at IKEA, and everyime we've gone here we have gone to this restaurant. I don't particularly like IKEA's own restaurant (or their bathroom, ick!) and we were really excited to see a Japanese fast food place! To me, the most memorable thing about this place is the plaque and stones outside of it. Right next to this restaurant is the remains of an historical "Brown's Tavern" where apparently George Washington used to stop by for some beers on the way back and forth to DC/VA. We found this the most interesting thing about the area in general. As for the restaurant, which literally, these ruins and plaques are in its backyard, the food was very good and pretty cheap. I see in earlier reviews that this is a common food court place, but I've never seen or heard of it in a food court. As a stand-alone restaurant I found it pretty good! In the end, for some reason, I come back to Brown's Tavern. I think more effort should be made to publicize it. We were very excited to stumble upon a place that was "frequented" by George Washington just outside our IKEA. If Washington was actually a regular here more should know about it. I am very interested in the history of the area in general and want to learn more!

Yes I only gave it two stars, but it is fast food Japanese and I don't want to throw people with a high ranking. That said, this is some legit fast food--I would definitely hit this place up before Wendy's or Mickey D's! The staff is nice, the place is quick, and the stirfrys are pretty big, tasty, and cheap. The sushi rolls are large, chalked full of goodies, and the sashimi is surprisingly fresh. Ask for extra sauce (spicy mayo or eel sauce)--it's free. The only thing they're missing: a drive-thru! (And yes I am from the Midwest and we like our drive-thrus thankyou very much!)

I was filled with joy when I saw this dine in Sarku Japan, like other reviewers stated, my first experience took place at Montgomery mall, where i worked for 3 years of my life, consuming Sarku Japan about 2-3 times a week. Like others, I'm hooked. I order triadic chicken and shrimp, and decided to try the sushi since we were dining in. The place was neat and clean, didn't take my food long to be cooked, the shrimp tempura sushi tasted fresh. We ordered two triadic chickens and one large drink, you can get free refills on drinks so we saved a little money, the total came to about 21 bucks. We ate at about 830 and I stayed full all night =)

So I'm used to eating from Sarku Japan in mall foodcourts, which never disappoints. This was the first time I've tried one of their stand-alone restaurants, and I have to say it was pretty good! I got a beef bento box, which comes with rice topped with teriyaki beef and mushroom, salad with ginger dressing, and 4 california rolls... all for $8 and some change! Not a bad deal if you ask me. Their sushi was actually tasty; didn't have that super-market sushi taste I was expecting. Great place to pop in for a quick and satisfying meal.

This place was recommended by a friend who is a foodie, so when we wandered in I was expecting a sit-down restaurant with silverware and china, not paper plates and plastic ware. That said, the guy behind the counter greeted us warmly, so we proceeded to order one of each of the five sushiroll specials. ALL OF THEM were fantastic. I especially liked the green dragon roll. We sat at a table after filling our fountain sodas and the food was delivered to our table within 5 minutes. The miso soup was also perfect. It might not be an "authentic" Japanese sushi experience, but in a pinch, it's yummy fast-food sushi. The location near Ikea is great and inside, it was busy but not crowded at noon on a Saturday. They also have 2 TVs.

  • Diwi G.

For the price, it's not bad at all. A decent joint for the local college kids to get an inexpensive Japanese-inspired meal. I took my nephew and his friend here for lunch and they were happy with the portions and the food quality. I think it's a much healthier alternative to other kinds of fast food. After you order at the counter, a staff person brings your order to your table so there's not a lot of confusion at the front counter -- a good idea since it looks like this place can get very crowded at peak times.

  • T S.

The chicken teriyaki was nice and not too sweet. The shrimp tempura definitely could have been fried a little longer but was very tasty. There is ample seating so I was able to find a nice window seat and enjoyed my lunch while enjoying the sunny day. Also the lady at the counter is very friendly and accomodating. I will go back again!

---2.5 Stars--- If you don't know what Sarku is, you either A) didn't spend your high school years going to Montgomery Mall every day, B) have never been to a food court at a mall, or C) don't walk by the food court at the mall every time you go to the ma

It is what it is. Fast food sushi/asian. We both got bento boxes. Me- tofu with rice. Not bad, but the salad was bitter. He- chicken deluxe with noodles. All in all not bad. It is fast food that didn't involve Mc or Bell.

I went here yesterday to get some lunch with a friend. I will say my overall experience was good. I got a bento box (chicken). It was really good. The service was fast as well. We dined in. The place was clean. What else can I say? I'll be back.

I wasn't expecting much from this kind of place, and I was correct. Not very fresh. Cheap ingredients. Japanese style, but not actually Japanese. Ho hum, can't expect much for 8 bucks at a chain.

If you have never eaten Sushi, or Teriyaki, or Tempura; Sarku Japan is a nice safe place to start your gastronomic journey. However, if you have eaten any or all of the above in high end restaurants, you will find the food extremely homogenized. Presentation is very nice, staff is very friendly and efficient, store is very clean and orderly, but the food, while being Asian-ish, is a little too pedestrian for my taste. As it was my first time, I ordered the Deluxe Bento Box, Teriyaki, Sushi, and Tempura. Like the store the food is orderly and fits neatly into the well arranged bento-ish box. One huge problem is the parking supplied for the strip shops and restaurants. It is tight and difficult to maneuver. Like a fender-bender waiting to happen. If you go at lunchtime, give yourself an additional 15 minutes for parking.

Disappointing. I'm not a sushi snob, but this wasn't very good. I had a California roll, spicy tuna roll, seaweed salad and miso soup for $15. The seaweed salad was fine since they don't make it. The miso soup was fine, too. The sushi was really bland and everything took a little too long to make. Whole Foods pre-made sushi is a little more, but far better.

A step below day-old, grocery store sushi. Though they turned out the sushi rolls I ordered in very short order, it was unfortunately reflected in the quality of the sushi. I took my order 'To Go' and when I opened the container I was assaulted by that 'fishy' smell that usually precedes a really awful sushi experience. The rice of all three rolls was abundant, bland, and of a bad consistency, and the salmon smelled and tasted like it had been sitting out for several hours more than it should have. The only roll that I didn't have to choke down was my cucumber and avocado roll, but vegetable rolls are extremely difficult to botch. The rice still made it less appetizing than it should have been. The only plusses I can offer for their sushi is that it came quickly, and was inexpensive. I now understand why.

This place is really great! It's not a fine-dining restaurant - they don't serve alcohol. It's a super-terrific place for really good sushi in a semi-fast-food environment. The service is excellent. The staff are genuinely helpful and courteous - (such a refreshing change from the norm...) The sushi is excellent and the environment is pleasing. It's very clean, including the restroom. There is nothing I don't like about it. It's a really good thing.

Tried them for the first time. Just had to. I am a sushi addict. Fast-food sushi? Hmm, don't know. Maybe the concept will catch on, but I am not sure this place is going about it the right way. The bento boxes are fast-food trays with a flair of an airline meal to them. No light soy sauce on the tables anywhere. And here is the deal breaker: no ginger miso dressing for the salad. They offered us French or Ranch dressing for the Japanese salad! And if we wanted one or the other, it was in a cafeteria style packets. I asked for a "normal" Japanese dressing and they said they don't have it, because...err... they just opened! Their deliveries haven't been organized yet. There is an oriental grocery within five minutes of there! If all else failed, one can get that kind of dressing at Safeway! The fellow at the cash register, although he appeared courteous and as if he was trying to learn, suggested adding pickled ginger to the salad! That's to compensate for the lack of ginger-miso dressing. Boy, what do you do about this kind of stuff? It's almost funny. I din't think the miso soup was good. They either diluted it too much or failed to mix it through evenly. It was very watery. I actually found the sushi I had pretty good. Not outstanding or anything but OK as a quick sushi fix. I also thought that the selection was very limited. They have the basic six-piece rolls, half-a-dozen of the big fancy rolls, and that's it! No nigiri, no à-la carte. Oh well. I think this might be a good place as a carry out or for a small party, if you can get there when the wait isn't too bad. Dining in? Probably not. And no salads, please!

  • Reuben A.

The california roll was pretty good along with the dumplings but the canned green tea was not good. The price without the green tea was comparable to a meal at Pot Belly. I agree with the other poster that the girl at the register was far from hospitable just to take your order and money. It was about the same price as Kiyoko Express in downtown College Park for a california roll but the selection wasn't as good.
